My OBM Story: Sigurdur Oli Sigurdsson
My Graduate Education:
MA in I/O Psychology from Western Michigan University
Ph.D. in Behavior Analysis from Western Michigan University
My Current Job Title:
Assistant professor
My Current Area of Research:
Behavioral safety, risk taking and risk discounting, postural behavior intervention research.
How I Became Interested In OBM:
I wanted to be an organizational psychologist, but was not sure I wanted to work in the tradition of mainstream I/O psychology. I was introduced to behavior analysis in my first year of undergraduate psychology, and loved it. When I found out about organizational applications of ABA, I read a few copies of JOBM and decided this was what I wanted to do with my life.
Why I Like OBM:
It is an inductive, practical, hard-science approach to important human behavior. And I am not big on "feelings".
What A Typical Day In My Job Looks Like:
I wake up later than I would have wanted, check my email, go to work, and come home later than I would have wanted. Work involves teaching, grading, planning and running research, service work for the university and department, reviewing papers, and supervising and advising students. That is exactly why working in academia appeals to me: I do a lot of different things, and I have a lot of freedom to pursue the things I am interested in.
