What's Your Line OBM?
Timothy Ludwig

Timothy Ludwig, Ph.D.
President, OBM Network

Once upon a time there was an old game show named What’s My Line whose premise was to have contestants guess the occupation of other people by asking questions.  This is all fine and well for firefighters, accountants, and farmers.  But apply this game to OBMers and I don’t think the show’s contestants could figure us out.

Contestant’s Question: “Do you work in organizational settings to impact employee and management behaviors through enacting changes to the system and environment?”

Mystery Person: “Yes.”

Contestant’s Question: “Do you teach what you know about behavior management in organizations to others?”

Mystery Person: “Yes.”

Contestant’s Question: “Do you go to conferences, read, or do your own studies to build on your knowledge of applying behavior analysis?”

Mystery Person: “Yes.”

So who was the mystery person?  Kristen Struss, Graduate Student, Queens College?  Kimberly Derk, Behavior Networks, GE Plastics?  Siggi Sigurdsson, assistant professor, University of Maryland, Baltimore County?  Dergio Pinto, consultant, B.E.S.T. Consulting, Inc?

Indeed, it could be any of us reading the OBMN Newsletter.  Whether we are consulting, providing reinforcement, or building our own knowledge, we all contribute to OBM.

It may be easy to think that the Network is a group of academics creating its own “economy of prestige” and certainly we are, as a Network, heavily represented by the academy and those that learn within it.  Indeed, listed below are the OBM presentations at the Association for Behavior Analysis Convention in San Diego, most presented by academics and their students.

Joe SassonBut consider the numerous opportunities to see the practice of applying OBM at conferences throughout the world dedicated to the application of behavioral principles to organizational challenges:

  • Kathy Culig chaired the program of the FABA/OBM  Conference in Sarasota Florida this past January featuring the likes of Jennifer Howard of CLG, Allan Quiat or the Chevron Corporation, Joe Sasson of MedAxiom, and Lori Miller of Ardent Consulting.
  • Howard Lees and Bruce Faulkner are again hosting the BMT Leadership Conference May 9-10 in Manchester England (http://www.bmt-leadership-conference.co.uk/).
  • Terry McSween just announced the 2007 Behavioral Safety Now Conference to be held September 25-27 in Kansas City (http://www.behavioralsafetynow.com/).
  • Consulting groups like Safety Performance Solutions and Aubrey Daniels International hold numerous public offering workshops and user group conferences.
  • On top of all this, Leslie Braksick, founder of the Continuous Learning Group was the Invited Speaker at ABA last year and Darnell Lattal and Judy Agnew of ADI will be presenting their work on Leadership and Performance Management this year at ABA.

So “What’s your line OBM”?  We are a Network of Teachers, Learners, and Doers each with something to contribute to each other.  So take the time to attend and present at these conferences, read and write in our journals, newsletters, and books, offer internships to our students, build a partnership with our consulting groups, and find effective means to help our industry leaders in OBM.  The more Network membership reinforces all our different groups, the more effective it becomes for all of us.

Jeanine Plowman StrattonSo join us: The OBM Network Meeting at ABA will be held Monday, May 28th at 7:30 PM in the Ford AB room at the conference.  At this meeting Jeanine Plowman Stratton’s Award Committee will be announcing this year’s OBM Lifetime Achievement Award and Outstanding Contribution in OBM honorees and Chuck Crowell will be awarding the Chris Anderson Student Research Award to Nicki Postma (Florida Tech) and Marco Tomasi (Florida State).  We will hear reports from our internship and curriculum committees.  Highlighted this year will be a “Network At Work” event where we will break into small groups and find ways to share resources, interests, and skills… so bring your business cards!  See you in San Diego!
