Transition
Tom Mawhinney
Coeditor, JOBM
This, my first contribution to the OBM Network Newsletter, is intended
to share with members of our community some news that I consider
positive. (The title of this announcement is the same as that of
the first editorial I wrote upon assuming my position as JOBM’s
Editor back in 1985.) Commencing with publication of JOBM 27(3),
John Austin will function as the sole Editor of JOBM and
I will assume a position on the Editorial Board, for a time
to be determined by the Editor. Between now and then, however,
John will, de facto, be the sole editor while I will be clearing
my desk of any work for which I remain responsible. This state of
affairs is a consequence of my decision, following discussions with
John and Bill Cohen, cofounder, Publisher, Editor-in-Chief and
leader of The Haworth Press, Inc., to relinquish my responsibilities
as one of JOBM’s current coeditors.
In my communications with Bill Cohen I made the following remarks
about my decision, “I recall a former colleague when leaving
a senior post saying: ‘My departure will make no more ripples
than slowly removing a finger from a glass of water.’” Informing
members of the OBM community also holding memberships in the OBM
Network will, I hope, contribute to a smooth transition from my Coeditorship of
the Journal to John’s Editorship.
Also, in support of a smooth transition, I have asked the OBM Network
leadership to permit me to make very brief remarks about the transition
during the OBM Network business meeting at ABA. The quid pro quo
for this favor was my promise not to say anything outlandish or provocative.
Whether any of what I may have to say will be considered humorous,
on the other hand, will likely be highly context dependent. Surely,
nothing I might intend to be humorous will rival Alyce Dickinson’s
ambush-roasting of “moi” at the 2005 FABA/OBM meetings
on the occasion marking my nearly 20 years of service as Editor/Coeditor of JOBM.
Please accept my thanks for the strong support of JOBM among
OBM Network members in the past and, hopefully, continued support
during a long and productive future.
