The Use of Functional Assessment and Frequency Building Procedures to Increase Product Knowledge and Data Entry Skills Among Foremen in a Construction Organization Ralph N Pampino, David A. Wilder, Carl Binder PhD

A functional assessment procedure, which was designed to identify insufficient skills that may have been responsible for employee performance problems, was administered to four foremen employed in a large construction organization. Results of this assessment procedure identified two skill areas, product knowledge and data entry, as deficient. Based on these results, an intervention targeting these performance deficits was implemented. During intervention, instructional and measurement procedures based on Precision Teaching and designed to increase rates of accurate responding were employed. A pair of multiple baseline designs across participants was used to evaluate intervention effectiveness. The intervention resulted in improved skills among all participants. Results suggest that the methods used in this study are a cost-effective way of empirically identifying performance deficits and training skills in organizations. Implications for the field of Organizational Behavior Management are discussed and suggestions for future research are provided.

Improving Anesthesia Nurse Compliance with Universal Precautions Using Group Goals and Public Feedback Sara D. Stephens, Timothy D. Ludwig

Universal Precautions (UPs), procedures to reduce the likelihood of accidental exposure to blood-borne pathogens, were observed among seven Certified Nurse Anesthetists and one anesthesia technician during intravenous line procedures. After six weeks of baseline measures, nurses participated in training, goal setting, and feedback targeting hand sanitizing practices. Three weeks later immediate needle disposal was targeted. Hand sanitizing behaviors increased from a group baseline percentage of 24% to 65% during the intervention, and 52% during withdrawal. No significant increases in immediate needle disposal were found. Participants disposed of needles immediately 53% of the time during baseline, 58% during the intervention phase, and 45% during withdrawal. Non-targeted UP behaviors also increased as a result of the intervention: Recapping needles with on-hand increased from 45% during baseline to 61% during the intervention phases; removing gloves from inside out increased from 61% to 93%; and wearing gloves when discarding waste increased from 31% to 52%. Auxiliary behaviors such as nurse and patient interactions remained consistently high throughout the study.

Book Review
Sonia Goltz

The book, Leadership from an Operant Perspective, by Judith L. Komaki is reviewed. The book describes a series of studies by Komaki and others that have contributed to an understanding of the dynamic, evolving performance-related interactions between leaders and followers, which include behaviors such as performance monitoring by leaders. A useful resource for researchers, practitioners, and students of Organizational Behavior Management, the book describes an entire area of operant research, including original predictions, empirical findings, and implications for future research and practice. In addition, the book is instructive in terms of how a theory, research methodology, and research stream are developed over time.
