Why go into OBM?

Judy Agnew

Master's and Ph.D. in Behavioral Psychology from University of Victoria, Canada. Thanks to the generosity of Alyce Dickinson and others at Western Michigan University, I also spent a year doing research and learning from the fabulous faculty and students there.

Vice President, Safety Services for Aubrey Daniels International

I started university as a business major. I took my first class in behavior analysis in my sophomore year and was hooked. The practical, data-based approach to helping people appealed to me. I quickly learned about the application of behavior analysis to business and found the perfect marriage of my interests.

After 18 years I still get a thrill when I see important business behaviors change. I have spent a significant part of my career in behavior based safety which is very meaningful work: I help people stay safe at work while simultaneously making their work environment more positive. Its work I feel good about.

Until recently I worked mostly at client sites implementing BBS or PM. For the last two years I have been working mostly from home selling consulting services, managing projects, writing, developing training/coaching materials, helping develop new consultants and some direct client work. A typical day includes corresponding with clients and colleagues via e-mail and telephone and/or writing (materials development, proposals, articles, books). My kids tell people I talk on the phone for a living; that says a lot.
