Why go into OBM?

I am currently a graduate student at Appalachian State University under Dr. Tim Ludwig, working towards my Masters in Industrial/Organizational Psychology and Human Resource Management. The program at Appalachian State is perfect for me because it allows me to apply my skills in OBM to the other more traditional fields in business. Upon my graduation, my short term plan is to find a job that allows me to apply the skills I have learned throughout my graduate school career. Furthering my education is a likely possibility as well. I may decide to go for my PhD, or an MBA. My current research looks to apply the principles of OBM and Organizational Development to the healthcare industry. I am studying a large hospital's employee staffing plan that was created for the 2009 H1N1 flu. I am interested in how the plan was created and developed, and whether the plan was successful or not in staffing the hospital during 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic. Ultimately, I hope to determine how to increase the effectiveness of the plan for future disasters at this and other hospitals. I became interested in OBM through John Austin's undergraduate Industrial/Organizational Psychology course at Western Michigan University. I had always known that I was interested in Psychology, but I just was not sure exactly what I wanted to do. Upon taking Dr. Austin's class, I knew immediately that OBM was for me. The principles of OBM worked consistently, had data to back it up, and it just made sense! I have been hooked ever since. OBM is great because you really can use the principles anywhere in any industry. I have found during my career at Appalachian State that even in classes or projects that are not related to OBM, I can use things I have learned in OBM to come to a greater understanding of the work. I have found that when I am working on a project or paper, my work turns out stronger because of my application of OBM to the problem. For me, OBM is about using the principles in a variety of industries, so that more people gain exposure to this field! |
